After a lengthy awards season, awards for films released in 2020 were wrapped up this past week with the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles. Disney-Pixar’s Soul won awards for animated feature and original score. Its win marks the 12th time that the Walt Disney Company has won the Oscar in the last 14 years. Netflix took home its first Oscar in the animated short category for the film If Anything Happens I Love You who competed against four other strong contenders! Far from normal-this marks the fifth year in a row that an American corporation-backed film has won the animated short Oscar! After a long year of the animation industry trying to break the social construct of animation being only geared for children, Actress Reese Witherspoon introduced the animated feature category with an interesting statement, telling audiences that animation’s great power is to show children that “anything is possible.” This statement seems to support the idea that many still believe, and want audiences to believe, that animation is exclusively a children’s art form.
